Gear Check with Tom Asta from CCS Skate on Vimeo.
Let’s face it, whatever board you’re riding is the right one. As long as you’re rolling, then you’re doing it right. But when the sad time comes that you have to put your old deck to rest, or get rid of those wheels that have just one too many flat spots, there are a lot of choices out there for what to get next. Gear Check is here to show you what your favorite pro’s and ams are riding just in case you need a little inspiration for your next set up.
We caught up with Tom Asta in Los Angeles last month when he was out there for Dew Tour. Tom shared his setup with us as well as blessing us with some seriously smooth asphalt assault on the street course (yes we know he wasn't actually skating on asphalt, but asphalt assault rhymes so deal with it). Tom is a silent but deadly ripper with some of the smoothest style around. His setup is no different. He keeps it classic and clean, and loves being on a board that's nice and broken in so that's the way your seeing his ride. Tom rides for Santa Cruz, LRG, Es, Thunder, Ricta, Mob and Electric Eyewear, and didn't take his beanie off the entire time we filmed this edit in 100 degree weather.
Tom recently joined the squad at Santa Cruz Skateboards and his first pro model is a take on the classic Santa Cruz strip logo. He rides an 8 inch stick and you can expect many more boards with his name on them coming out of the Santa Cruz camp soon.
These Thunder trucks have seen many a ledge in their day. Tom rides the 143 Thunders to fit his 8 inch board just right. Plain silver trucks are just another example of Tom keeping it classic and clean.
Toms Ricta NRG PRO wheel in 51mm keep him speeding around the park, through the streets and across any manual pads that stand in his way. It must be weird to ride a wheel with your signature on it. Do you think people see him at the park and think he signed his own wheels? It can happen to any of us I guess, you're at a signing and you think someone hands you their board to sign, but it's really your own and you sign every wheel? Happens all the time.
